Temple University’s Wellness Resource Center program staff provide a variety of educational services to new students and facilitates an ongoing education campaign for continuing students related to sexual assault, domestic and dating violence, stalking and sexual exploitation including:
- Orientation: Developing orientation programs for new students, faculty and staff, and developing ongoing awareness campaigns on the university’s policies and prevention programs related to sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking and sexual exploitation, including Pennsylvania’s definitions of sexual assault, consent, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking and sexual exploitation, as well as how to avoid potential incidents.
- Training: Providing training to selected students and faculty and staff members to provide support, education and counseling referrals to victim-survivors.
- A Social Marketing Campaign: Utilizes marketing concepts to promote behaviors instead of products. The seven elements of the model are knowledge, desire, skills, optimism, facilitation, stimulation and reinforcement. Five of the Wellness Resource Center’s 17 social marketing posters relate to interpersonal violence, including sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking and sexual exploitation.
- Give A Hoot Walk a Mile in Her Shoes to WalkTU: This event serves as Temple’s kickoff event for Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April. Previously Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, this event was changed in 2017 to be more inclusive and reflect the full scope of sexual violence. This event invites all members of the Temple community to come together and walk a mile around campus to send a message that interpersonal violence is unacceptable toward any member of our community.
- Education sessions: Programs are developed for student groups, or guest-lecture requests to address specific health content related to wellness. Sexual assault is a commonly requested content area. Campus resources are also covered throughout the presentation. Students learn how to recognize high-risk behaviors and other problems/issues in alcohol/drug use; sexual health; interpersonal violence and sexual assault; mental health; and body image; how to intervene (Say Something); making appropriate referrals to on-campus resources.
- The Clothesline Project: A visual display that bears witness to the violence against women. During the public display, a clothesline is hung with shirts. Each shirt is decorated to represent a particular woman’s experience, by the survivor herself or by someone who cares about her. The shirts are color coded to show the form of abuse and whether the victim survived the abuse. This is coupled with educational programs and information.
- Vagina Monologues: A series of women’s monologues acted out by members of the Temple community, based on the book by Eve Ensler. Vagina Monologues occurs every February and is coordinated through the V-Day Organization. V-Day is a global activist movement to stop violence against women and girls.
- Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: This annual event was first held in the Spring of 2012. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a national event designed to encourage male participation in the effort to reduce gender violence. Male students are provided with a pair of women’s shoes and walk a mile around campus to show their support for student safety on campus.
